Frequently asked questions

What is paediatric physiotherapy and how can it help my child?

Paediatric physiotherapy is a form of physical therapy designed specifically for children and infants. It aims to help children develop, improve, or recover physical abilities that have been impacted by injury, illness, or disability.

What conditions can paediatric physiotherapy treat?

Paediatric physiotherapy can treat a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to, developmental delays, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological conditions, respiratory conditions, and sports injuries.

How often should my child attend physiotherapy sessions?

The frequency of physiotherapy sessions depends on the individual child and their specific needs. Your physiotherapist will recommend a treatment plan that is best suited to your child.

What should I expect during a paediatric physiotherapy session?

During a paediatric physiotherapy session, your child will engage in various activities and exercises designed to improve their physical abilities and achieve their therapy goals. These may include strengthening exercises, fitness, balance and coordination activities, and other movements that are appropriate for your child's age and abilities.

How can I prepare my child for a physiotherapy session?

To prepare your child for a physiotherapy session, it is recommended to explain what will happen during the session, and let them know that the physiotherapist is there to help them. You can also encourage them to wear comfortable clothing and to bring along any toys or props that may make the session more enjoyable for them.

Can physiotherapy be done at home or does it have to be done in a clinic?

Physiotherapy can be done in a clinic setting, at home, in the community (school or park) or even at the pool. Your physiotherapist will advise you on the best location for your child's therapy based on their individual needs and condition.

How do I know if my child needs physiotherapy?

If you are unsure if your child needs physiotherapy, it is best to consult with your GP,  paediatrician or your physiotherapist. They can assess your child's physical abilities and provide guidance on whether physiotherapy is appropriate for their needs.
